Shirehampton 2

Glastonbury Town 1

Glastonbury manager Wayne Bradshaw was left fuming after he saw his side lose 2-1 in a rearranged league fixture at Shirehampton on Saturday.

The victory puts Shirehampton back on top of the Somerset County League table as they now have a decisive six-point advantage over the Dollies with a game in hand.

Both teams proved over the 90 minutes that they are good enough to challenge for honours on present form, but on the day the side who looked the more solid defensively were always the side most likely to pick up the points.

Glastonbury, to be fair, deserved to take at least a point, but their lack of concentration proved costly and, although you might get away with it against a side of lesser ability, it is not something you get away with against a side at the top of the table.

The opening exchanges were for the most part dominated by Glastonbury, but, although a few half-chances were created by both teams, it always looked more likely that a piece of magic or one defensive error would open the game up.

The match remained in the balance at the interval, but it was during the early stages of the second half, which Glastonbury dominated, that the Dollies broke the deadlock. Steve Spencer, with his back to goal, turned a defender and sent a superb shot from 25 yards into the roof of the net.

The goal should have given Glastonbury the impetus to push on, but a lack of concentration at the back allowed Shirehampton to get back on level terms within seven minutes as Ashley Weir stabbed the ball home from close range. The game appeared to be heading for a draw until Glastonbury were penalised for a push in the penalty area on 85 minutes and Ryan McCall scored from the spot to give an elated Shirehampton side all three points.

Bradshaw said immediately after the game: "We played well for 70 minutes, but you cannot afford to have a lapse in concentration against a side like Shirehampton.

"We have to be disappointed and we were made to pay the ultimate price. Having said that, a draw would have probably been a fair result, until those two errors."

Glastonbury will be looking to reverse the scoreline on Saturday as they entertain Shirehampton once again in the Somerset County Premier/Division One Cup. The kick-off is at the earlier time of 2pm.

Glastonbury Town FC weekly draw: week six (£10) – Rod Denning, Garry Lovelace, Glad Barnes, Geno Costanza, John Doole.
