Endangered species talk at SWT

Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 17:59

A talk about some rare and endangered mammals is being held at Wells and Mendip Museum on Tuesday, organised by the city's group of the Somerset Wildlife Trust.

Conservationist Ann Langdon will be talking about the Mendip Hills Bat and Dormouse Project, which is being supported by the BBC Wildlife Fund and Natural England.

Twelve out of 16 species of bats who live in the UK have been found in the Mendip Hills area.

Bats are an important indicator species for the health of the countryside as they feed on a wide variety of insects, and sadly at the present time no less than five bat species are considered to be endangered.

Numbers of dormice have also declined steeply in many areas due to loss of suitable habitat nationally.

There are opportunities available for volunteers who would like to help with habitat conservation locally.

The talk starts at 7.30pm and admission is £1.50 for members and £2 for visitors. Refreshments will be served.
